Asiago Herb Hoagie Rolls

 

Delicious homemade Asiago Herb Hoagie Rolls , soft of the inside, but when topped off with the herb butter mixture, it gives them that crusty top.  Just right for those cheesesteak, meatball,  Italian or roast beef sandwiches, possibilities are limited only to your imagination.  Once you’ve tried these, you’ll be hard pressed to go back to those store bought rolls.

 

Prep:1 hour 45 min.           Cook time: 20 min.
Total time:2 hours 5 min.

Ingredients

  • 3 teaspoons granulated sugar, divided
  • 2¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1½ cups warm water (about 110 to 115 degrees F), divided
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 to 4½ cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon of each.. garlic powder and onion powder
  • 1½ cups shredded Asiago cheese
